Master of Architecture - ADMISSIONS

Introduction
Candidates for admission to the Master of Architecture 3+ and 2+  programs and the Master of Architecture in High Performance Buildings must apply to both the M Arch Program and the Graduate School of the University of Washington.

Candidates for admission to the Dual Degree Master of Architecture / Master of Landscape Architecture program must apply to both the M Arch and MLA programs and pay a separate application fee for each. Applicants must also apply to the Graduate School of the University of Washington. Application reviews are conducted separately by each department. Should a candidate get accepted into one degree program but not both, the offer of admission still stands for the program you were accepted to.

There is one admissions cycle each year: January 15 deadline for autumn quarter entry. Applications will be accepted from September 15-January 15.

The Admissions review process will begin after the January 15 deadline.

Admission to the M Arch Program is highly competitive. The Department of Architecture's M Arch Admissions Committee gives priority to applicants whose demonstrated abilities will enable them to complete the program expeditiously and with a high level of achievement. In evaluating applicants, the committee considers the following materials:

Online

The first step in the application process is to create an on-line Application for Graduate Study at the University of Washington (when your applicant profile is complete, pay the $85 application fee online and submit).  You are able to log in and out of your application until it is complete and ready to submit.

This application will collect the following documents online:

  • Transcripts:  Upload a PDF copy of your official transcript from each prior degree-awarding school attended.  Please ensure that student name and school name appear and that the scan is legible. When scanning original transcripts, make sure the pages are oriented upright for screen viewing (vertical or landscape).
  • Letters of recommendation:  Applicants will be prompted to provide names and e-mail address of three recommenders. Recommenders will immediately be sent via e-mail a link to the online evaluation form.  A minimum of three letters of recommendation is required.  Maximum accepted is four.
  • Department Program Application: first, download the department's Application for Admission to the Master of Architecture program PDF (the link is also provided on Graduate School Application), and save the form on your computer. Then complete the form and upload it.  This form must clearly indicate the degree program for which you wish to be considered.
  • Statement of Purpose:
M Arch 3+, 2+ Year, and dual degree M Arch/MLA applicants: A one-page statement of purpose should clearly articulate your goals and the extent to which the M.Arch. program can be expected to prepare you for them. Although this statement should be primarily forward-looking, some information about your background may be helpful.
M Arch in High Performance Building applicants: The statement of purpose must include a specific and clearly-articulated plan of study. Applications which do not include a clear plan of study cannot be evaluated seriously. This statement should also include a list of faculty in the department who are best qualified to work with you on the program of study. The Graduate Program Coordinator will ask the faculty on this list, and others who can comment on the proposal, to evaluate the application. In order to be admitted to the program, it is essential for candidates to gain the support of faculty who share academic interests with them.
  • GRE test scores: Report official scores to the UW Institution Code: 4854. The application will also prompt you to self-report your test scores. If you have not yet taken the test, please enter the test date on the form.  Official scores must be received by the application deadline.
  • TOEFL test scores (for international students): Report Official Scores to the UW Institution Code: 4854. Minimum test scores for admission to the Master of Architecture: 580 TOEFL, 237 TOEFLC,  92 TOEFLiBT or 7.0 IELTS.  The application will also prompt you to self-report your test scores. If you have not yet taken the test, please enter the test date on the form.  Official scores must be received by the application deadline.

Hardcopy

In addition to the on-line application, the process requires that you send the following items directly to the Department of Architecture (note: all other documents must be submitted as part of the on-line process):

  • A portfolio of work in graphics and design (or similar work appropriate to the program). The portfolio should be no more than 20 pages (sheets) in a format no larger than 1.5 x 10.5 x 11.5 inches. It must show evidence of the applicant's preparation for study in architecture. For the two-year program this should include models and freehand, technical, and digital drawings of architectural projects. If possible it should also include other examples of design and artistic work, such as furniture, painting, and/or photography. (Advice on preparing the portfolio)
  • A printed copy of the Application for Graduate Study.
  • A printed copy of Department/Program Application.

The application materials must be postmarked by the application deadline.
